One
day a friend and I While walking on the bay
Admiring a blue sky Listening to the day
A stillness fell upon us Chilling to the bone
No one was around us Yet we were not alone
A seal was still and bobbing Looking out from shore
Watching creatures robbing The seal's health food store
Off in the distance feeding Two whales came into view
After salmon they were speeding Not taking time to chew
When dinner left the bay The Orca's hung around
Taking time to play Enjoying Puget Sound
The three of us stood staring My friend a seal and I
This stillness we were sharing A gift from Him on high
The stillness was within As the whales swam about
Seeing nothing but their fin Or a noisy water spout
Leaping through the air Reaching up for space
We were seeing something rare And truly full of grace
This was a one-time thing Out in nature’s bay
Though I look most every spring To see Orca whales play
So when a whale I need I close my eyes to see
My memory to read My friend a seal and me
